The special supplemental nutrition program for Women, Infants and Children, commonly known as WIC, provides nutritious foods to supplement the regular diet of pregnant women, breastfeeding women, post-partum women, infants and children under the age of five. Participants must meet Colorado income guideines and qualify based on nutritional assessment.

Participants in WIC receive nutrition education and referrals to health services. The funds for WIC are provided by the United States Department of Agriculture and there is no charge for the services provided by this program. In the past year, almost one and one half million dollars in food were provided to the WIC clients in the six counties of northeast Colorado. A proper diet during pregnancy can increase a woman's chance of having a healthy baby and infants on WIC have improved growth and cognitive development. Children on WIC also have a lower incidence of anemia.
