Chlorinating Your Private Well Homeowner's Guide To Living With a Well and Septic System Keeping Your Water Supply Safe The Northeast Colorado Health Department tests public and private drinnking water for bacterial contamination. It is recommended that private wells be tested annually for bacteria. It is also recommended that you test your water if there are known problems with well water in your area, if you have experienced problems near your well such as flooding or land disturbances, and if you replace or repair any part of your well system. Samples must be tested the same day they are collected. In addition to bacteria testing, NCHD will also collect water samples for a variety of other tests, including nitrates. The Weld County Health Department actually tests the water, but we will mail it in if the samples are delivered to our Sterling office. We mail out water samples every Tuesday and the sample must be collected the same day.
